Empowering Seniors – 6 Simple Things To Make Your Home Safer

Personal safety, for seniors is so important. Don’t let your kindness make you vulnerable. Never give out personal information to anyone other than your loved ones. Seniors can become victims very easily so its important to know what to trust and what to believe. In an uncertain situation take a deep breath and take a step back and be aware. Don’t be scared, but be aware of who you’re talking to, your surroundings, and what and who you’re transacting with. Detective Schillaci stresses the key to success to not becoming a victim is being aware.

There are a lot of simple things you can do in your home to feel safer. It doesn’t have to take a lot of money and a lot of extras but there are little things you can do to make your home safer:

  1. Get an alarm
  2. Replace screws with plate the door locks into 3 1’2” to 4” screws
  3. Prepare your home, example trim hedges below the window seal so windows are not blocked
  4. Putting a sign up in your front yard (monitored by, beware of dog)
  5. Make sure newspapers are picked up and lawns are manicured
  6. Look out for your neighbors and have your neighbors look out for you

Burglar or predators do their homework its not spontaneous they will do a canvas; they will drive around or walk around and look at houses to see what homes look like someone is away. The safest neighborhoods are the ones where neighbors look out for each other and care for each other. If something doesn’t look right, they are making a phone call to the police or a neighbor to make sure everything is okay.

Prepare and arm yourself with knowledge, knowledge is powerful. And remember be aware!
